Tennis
Five floodlit clay courts and two artificial surface courts catering to players of all ages. These courts have played host to ITF tournaments and the Southern India Championships since 1889.
The Courts
The Club maintains both clay and artificial surface courts, offering year-round play in all conditions. Coaching is available for juniors and adults. The floodlit courts allow play into the evening throughout the year.
Structured leagues operate across categories (men's, women's, and mixed doubles) with internal and inter-club fixtures on the calendar.
A Heritage of Champions
In 1884, lawn tennis courts were established at the club. By 1889, the Southern India Championships were inaugurated, among the earliest organised tennis tournaments in India. For decades, players travelled to Madras to compete. Standards were set here.
Much later, when Vijay Amritraj, Anand Amritraj, and Ashok Amritraj emerged from Madras to represent India on the world stage, they did so from a city whose tennis culture had already been cultivated through club competition.
Their ascent did not occur in isolation. It was made possible by institutions that existed long before headlines.
From the structured club ecosystem of Chennai emerged players such as Ravi (Rabi) Venkatesan, among other competitive players of the Madras circuit. The courts today host structured leagues, coaching programmes, and competitive fixtures that reflect that lineage.
